The target audience for Doctor Who were originally male however between the year 1970-2010 the female audience increased by 22%.
2) What audience pleasures are offered by Doctor Who - An Unearthly Child? Apply Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory to the episode. Make sure you provide specific examples from the episode to support your ideas.
Personal Identity:when the audience can see themselves and relate to characters.For example teenagers might relate to Susan and elderly people can see themselves in Doctor Who.Personal Relationships:when the audience get attached or feel affection towards the characters or actors.Diversion (Escapism):when the audience escape their feelings and use their favourite show e.g Doctor Who as a way to escape and feel better.Surveillance (Information / Facts):Doctor Who teaches their audience about time travel,theory about the future,other worlds and space.

In 2020 people such as black and Asian people might not see themselves reflected in Doctor who because of the lack of Black and Asians characters represented in Doctor Who.The modern audience will also not feel close to the characters compared to audience that watched the show from the begging.Modern audience might also not learn much from Doctor Who compared to Doctor Who audience in 1963.This is because people can easily learn about space by simply searching it up.

Visceral pleasure:An example of Visceral pleasure in Unearthly child that could create tension for the audience is when the space ship started shaking and moving through the space.this could have the audience scared or worried for the character as they aren't aware of what happened to the characters after the episode ended in a hang cliff.
Vicarious pleasure:An example of this in Unearthly child Is when Susan talks about her wish to live a normal life just like a regular teenager on earth and stop time travelling.the audience might have felt sympathy for Susan in that scene.
Voyeuristic Pleasure:An example of This is space.This is because audience back then didn't know much about space.Therefore Space was a completely a new discovery for the audience in 1963.

The only had 2 channels: BBC and ITV. Therefore people they didn't have a lot of options to pick from

Doctor Who is important for BBC because Doctor Who is BBC biggest exports.Therefor they can make similar series to Doctor Who because they know people will watch it.

Doctor Who has large amount of merchandise because Doctor Who has a large fan base.Therefore they expect the merchandise sold out.Example of Doctor Who merchandise are toys and shirts.

This Suggest that Doctor Who has a huge fandom worldwide.Therefore BBC launched in 98 different places such as Seoul,Sydney and New York.Most of the people in the fandom are British.This suggest.This suggests that British community was united together through Doctor Who.A show that most of them grew up watching.The BBC is very important important for the fandom because it's where Doctor Who audience watch the show on.
