Doctor Who:Language and Representation
1) Write a summary of the notes from our in-class analysis of the episode. You can use your own notes from the screening in class.
In the beginning of the episode we are introduced to Susan.Susan is picking an outfit she should wear.This is supposed to make young teenagers girls relate to Susan.later on we are introduced to Susan's teachers talking to each others and later on deciding to follow Susan to her house.While following Susan They came across a police box in an abandoned place.The teachers then meet up with Susan's grandpa that is not willing to tell the teachers about Susan's whereabouts.The teachers later on deiced to go inside the police box as they here Susan's voice coming from there.In the police box they meet up with Susan and find about Susan and her grandpa being aliens from a different world.
Camerawork and sound:The budget of Doctor who was low therefore you can notice the camera slightly moving.At a certain point of the first episode you can notice a mic at the top to make the voices of the actors louder.
Mise-en-scene:Susan is introduced and dressed as a typical 1960 s teenager.
Narrative and genre:The genre of Doctor who is Sci-fi.
2) How can we apply narrative theories to this episode of Doctor Who?
Todorov's Equilibrium: In Doctor Who the Equilibrium part of story is when Susan appears as a typical young teenagers and when the teacher are shown talking.This part is considered the balanced and calm part of episode
Propp's character theory: In Doctor Who we can notice all type of 7 roles characters appearing.For example Doctor who appears as the hero of the story ans Susan as his sidekick.
Barthes's enigma and action codes:One action code that happened in Doctor who is when the spaceship starting moving and a black shadow appears afterwards in the end of the episode.
Levi-Strauss's binary opposition: Some examples of Levi-Strauss's binary opposition is evil vs good and Human vs Alien.
3) In your opinion, what is the most important scene in the episode and why?
The most important scene is When Susan's teachers find out about Susan and her grandpa being aliens that live in a spaceship and time travel.
4) What genre is An Unearthly Child and how can you tell? Make specific reference to aspects of the episode.
The genre of Unearthly child is science fiction.One reference to that is the mention of space and the appearance of a spaceship in the first episode.Another reference is time travelling and aliens.In the first episode we fine out Susan and her grandpa are Aliens that time travel.
5) How does An Unearthly Child reflect the social and historical contexts of the 1960s?
One way An Unearthly Child reflect the social and historical context of 1960 s in the mention of space.This is because in 1961 Yuri Gagarin became the first man to reach space.This was the star of a whole new era of space.Not many people knew much about space so when Doctor Who was first realised some people might have seen it as a way to learn more about space.
