Audience: Effect Theory 2
1) Write down a media product for each category of Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory and WHY it fits that particular audience use/gratification. The first one is done for you:
INFORMATION/SURVEILLANCE
Example media product: The Times newspaper
Why audiences enjoy it: It tells audiences important information about politics, the world and more.
Why audiences enjoy it: It tells audiences important information about politics, the world and more.
PERSONAL IDENTITY
Example media product: K drama on Netflix
Why audiences enjoy it: The audience normally relate to certain scenes in k dramas,for example they might relate to a character background.
DIVERSION/ENTERTAINMENT
Example media product: The Blue Planet video
Why audiences enjoy it: The audience can escape real life and fantasise about being in a place that in reality it would never be possible.While watching the Blue Planet i could feel the connection even tho i wasn't there.
RELATIONSHIPS
Example media product: A show
Why audiences enjoy it: The audience might feel attached to a certain show because they care about one of the characters and they want tho know what will happen to that character in new episodes.
2) Re-watch the clip from Blue Planet above and write a paragraph analysing how elements of the clip offer the audience pleasures or gratifications (use media terminology from Uses and Gratifications theory and the 3 Vs - notes outlined above).
The Audience can feel entertainment pleasure.This is because they can escape reality and be in the place that in reality they can never be or experience it.They can also learn information that they didn't know about the ocean e.g learn about the life of a fish in the ocean and how there are creatures that exist in that ocean that we human don't know about yet.We can also relate to the Vicarious Pleasure because we can experience new things for example the life of a fish.
